All Are Invited to Bilisummaa-Fest in Oromia

(Oromocentre, Melbourne, Adoolessa 7, 2012)  Irreechaa is a day of national celebration in Oromia, especially in a sense of Thanksgiving to Waaqa or God; it is primarily originated among the Blue Nile-bound Cushitic people of the Oromo thousands of years ago.

Nowadays, at national level, it is celebrated in the Bishoftu town of Oromia at Lake Arsadii (Hora Arsadi) on the last Sunday of September. During the festival, the Aba Gadaa (traditionally elected national leader), the other community leaders as well as the Oromo community at large give thanks toWaqaa for the blessed transition from the rainy season to the bright and colorful Birra (spring) season.

Regarding this year’s fest, the following call is already made by the Qeerroo Bilisummaa (the Oromo youth struggling for freedom) to all individuals and groups, who are interested in celebrating the next Irreechaa festival:

“Welcome to the coming 2012 Ayyaana Irreechaa (Irreechaa festival)! According to the dhahaa Oromoo/Oromo calender, September 30, 2012 is the annual Thanksgiving day – Irreecha Birraa– of this year. An Irreecha Birraa is a celebration that repeats once in a year in birraa and involves special activities or amusements. It has a lot of importance in the Oromo people’s lives. We celebrate Irreechaa to thank Waaqa for the blessings and mercies we have received throughout the past year at the sacred grounds of Hora Arsadi. The Irreechaa festival is celebrated every year throughout Oromia and around the world, whereever diaspora Oromo live. We do celebrate Irreechaa, not only to thank Waaqa, but also to welcome the new season of plentiful harvests after the dark and rainy winter associated with nature and creature. OnIrreechaa festival, a collective of friends, families, and relatives gather together and celebrate with joy and happiness. Irreechaa festival brings different peoples closer to each other and make social bonds. We, the Oromo people, celebrate Irreechaa festival in order to live our tradition as a society. You are all invited to be the partaker of our joy!”

Actually, Irreechaa festival is not only traditional, but it is also the day of celebrating and the time of living out bilisummaa/freedom amidst the phenomena of colonization, oppression and subjugation of the Oromo people. Irreechaa is a Bilisummaa-Fest, as a friend of Gadaa.com once coined it. It is the day, on which all Oromo in every walk of life do feel to have freedom from the year-round Woyane’s tyranny.

The Oromo of every creed and region do celebrate Irrreechaa in unison – as a nation, despite the heavy siege of the Woyane invading army surrounding the Hora Arsadi sanctuary, where the celebration takes place at the national level. About 3 million Oromo come together every year to exercise this spirit of freedom and unity, which can help the move of our people towards achieving national sovereignty.

Women as the central creators and assimilators of identity

(Oromocentre, Melbourne, 3 June 2012) Research shows that Oromo women have developed a clear, cultivated fashion sense that connects them to peoples and places beyond their region.

Dr. Peri Klemm, an African art historian at California State University, Northridge, original work on the Oromo women of Eastern Oromia reveals that  Oromo women and girls are creating new looks that draw from and resonate with historically relevant body art practices and which link them to a wider global world.

According to the research, the  contemporary  dress is a symbolic means through which Oromo “women come to understand and make sense of their socio-political and economic experiences and their identity as Oromo within the Ethiopian state today.”

“Women’s bodies and their personal arts are instrumental in the production, albeit subtle and symbolic, of Oromo identity and Oromo consciousness,” says the research conducted by Dr. Peri Klemm, an African art historian at California State University, Northridge.

According to the research conducted by Dr Peri Oromo society views women as the dominant creators and assimilators of cultural symbols.

“At this time, women were independently creating their own material expressions based on the emerging nationalist consciousness sweeping the Oromo countryside, and these practices continue today through the manipulation of new materials in the production of upper torso body art.”

Oromo women’s dress is probably associated with the wolrd view of the Oromo nation association with procreation.

“For the Oromo, the lower body is connected to the past through its link to the ground, to birthing, and to containment. This is a space where loose, layered skirts and a tight, cloth belt become metaphors for the opening and closing of the body.”

It added that  the upper body is where the future rests and a whole host of objects, including amulets, beadwork, and face paint, are brought together here to assert a national identity in anticipation of future encounters.

According to the Oromo Women’s Internatinal Conference, in the Oromo society, women played distinct roles through an institution called the Siiqqee (a symbolic decorated stick given to all women by their mothers upon marriage) in which the rights of the women respected by society. “It is a sort of sorority that provides women with channels to participate in village councils, and a cultural vehicle to mobilize en masse against violence and abuse.”

OROMO CONTINUE TO FLEE VIOLENCE

(Oromcentre, Melboure, 20 May 2012) At least half of the more than 2.5 million refugees fleeing Ethiopia are Oromo.

According to Cultural Survival, contrary to the received impression, many Ethiopian refugees are not direct victims of the border dispute between Ethiopia and Somalia, but rather of internal ethnic conflict.Oromo refugees are beginning to arrive in the United States.

From August 14 to 21, the 7th Congress of the Union of Oromo Students in North America met in Washington, D.C. About 50 Oromo attended the meeting, some ten percent of all Oromo in the United States.

Through interviews with recently arrived refugees, about a third of the Congress’ participants, information was gathered about why they left, the particular problems with host governments and international relief agencies given their unrecognized status as an ethnic majority fleeing political persecution.

The roots of the present Oromo-Amhara conflict lie in the late 1800s when the independent Oromo nation was conquered by Abyssinians who were creating an empire. The Oromo have always viewed the Amhara Emperor Menelik and his successors, backed by European powers, as colonizers. His retainers acquired rights over the most productive Oromo lands and were allowed to exact tribute from even greater areas. Written Oromo texts were destroyed and education of Oromos was conducted in Amharic.
